Hinduism is a religious tradion that originated in theIndian subcontient. Hinduism is often referred to as Sanātana Dharma by its practitioners, a Sanskrit phrase meaning "the eternal law." Among its roots is thehistorical vedic religion ofIron age India.
Hinduism's vast body of scriptures is divided into Sruti ("revealed") and Smriti ("remembered"). These scriptures discusstheology,philosophy and mythology, and provide information on the practice ofdharma (religious living). Among these texts, theVedah and theUpnishads are the foremost in authority, importance and antiquity. Other major scriptures include the Tantra,the Agama, thePurans and the epicsMahabharat andRamayan. The Bhagavat Gita, a treatise from the Mahābhārata, spoken by Lord Krishan, is sometimes called a summary of the spiritual teachings of the Vedas.
